The Auto Book Clip Manager interconnects your clipboard with an infinite text repository and a flexible, powerful, extremely fast search function. It gives you ultra-quick access to past information when your brain fails, effectively extending your cognitive abilities. It streamlines repetitive pasting operations between applications and serves as a tool for managing email templates, AI prompts, common phrases and other useful text snippets.

Here are the top 7 reasons to choose Auto Book over alternatives.

1. Digital Sovereignty

Auto Book's Clip Manager – like all of my code – is deliberately designed to put the user in control. Unlike most modern software, which often locks users into closed systems, my approach prioritizes digital sovereignty. All your clip archive files are simple linefeed- and tab-separated plain text files that can be edited in any text editor or spreadsheet application, if necessary, or converted to a different format.

User-defined Pin Sets are also stored in this way and can directly be shared among users simply by copying them into the Pin Set folder, for example to share collections of AI prompts.

Auto Book requires no installation. It works exclusively within its program folder and does not access any other files on your computer (except if you tick the “Start with Windows” option, in which case a shortcut is copied to the startup folder). If you uncheck that option and delete the whole program folder, no traces whatsoever will remain on your system.

Auto Book sends no data over the internet. It doesn't call home. It works locally on your computer. If you allow news to be shown (see checkbox on Config tab), it will download a simple text file at times with short news. No data are transmitted alongside this operation. It's a simple, completely anonymous download.

2. Light-weight Design

Auto Book uses only minimal computer resources. You'll see CPU load hovering at 0% or 0.1% in Task Manager most of the time.

The clip archive is managed with a transactional system where only changed clips are written to disk periodically.

Most operations, including the search, are performed completely in-memory, ensuring an instantaneous feel.

The only graphics file used in the whole of Auto Book is the little pin symbol for pinned clips.

The Clip Manager's search is lightning-fast and delivers results in real-time, even after your clip archive has grown to tens of thousands of clips. That's because all clips are loaded into memory on startup and the search algorithm is very efficient, despite the wide range of search options.

Speed isn't just about convenience. It changes the way you work.

Instant results mean that the threshold where it makes sense to use the Clip Manager is much lower than it would be with an even slightly slower search. Since the window also pops into the foreground instantly whenever needed, it becomes economical to retrieve even relatively short text snippets instead of retyping them, thus multiplying the Clip Manager's use cases.

Furthermore, if you find instantly what you need, your focus on the current task isn't lost and your creative flow isn't interrupted.

And maybe most importantly, real-time results allow you to vary your search patterns quickly, swooping down on needed data in milliseconds and discovering old information that may never have surfaced with a slower search that introduces annoying delays. These asymmetric benefits are hard to quantify, but can make a critical difference in many cases.

4. Ultra-flexible Search Syntax

The Clip Manager's search syntax is likely the most flexible you have seen.

You can search by date, length, keywords, and clip content. You can use Regular Expressions. You can do AND, String, and NOT searches. There is an additional, special X Search which allows searches by initial letters of consecutive words. And you combine and mix all options freely. This enormous flexibility puts you in the best possible information to find your needed information reliably and quickly.

You can modify all options efficiently by typing Modifier characters, which are simple letters – so you won't lose time ticking checkboxes or looking through menus.

5. Effective Text Management with Pin Sets

The Clip Manager's Pin Set functionality is designed for easy access to text collections for specific purposes. A prime use case are AI prompts for various applications – instead of retyping prompts each time, work them out carefully once, and save them as a Pin Set.

When the need arises again, load your hand-crafted prompts at once – simply select the desired Pin Set from the direct list. You save time and achieve better results with your most effective prompts.

Pin Set management is as easy as it gets. Pin the clips you like, then choose Save Pin Set or Add to Pin Set from the File menu.

6. Designed for Ease of Use

Great emphasis has been put on the Clip Manager's use concept. Keyboard shortcuts, buttons and menus are carefully designed to support quick and intuitive operations.

The menus are as flat as possible. There are no deeply nested or hard-to-find options.

Careful design choices add up to an overall productive and smooth user experience:

  • Pin Sets and Clip Searches can be instantly loaded from a direct list.
  • All modes can be switched via logical keyboard shortcuts.
  • Double-clicking clears the Clip Search and Find in Clip boxes
  • There's a direct button to toggle Always-on-top mode with a single click.
  • Delete clips via direct button or Keyboard shortcut.
  • Flip the window to a secondary position on the same or a different monitor via Ctrl+Tab. Both positions are remembered across restarts.
  • The unique Input State after opening the Clip Preview via a hotkey maintains keyboard focus to the previously used application, enabling immediate pasting to any type of window.

7. Comprehensive Functionality

Auto Book's Clip Manager offers a comprehensive set of essential functions with easy and intuitive access.

Five Modes

Five modes allow you to tailor the Clip Manager's behavior to your use case and personal preferences. Capture Mode, Afterpaste Mode, Bump Mode, Restoration Mode and Selection Mode can all be switched on-the-fly via keyboard shortcuts and menu options.

Pinning Clips

Pin clips to keep them on top of the list for future use simply by ticking the checkbox. Pinned clips will persist across restarts.

Unlimited Scroll

Scroll down in your clip archive or search results as far as you want. The custom-made scroll algorithm always fills only the current display, ensuring minimal CPU load and instant responsiveness even when tens of thousands of results are found.

Keywords

Add keywords to your clips by Ctrl+double-clicking the Keywords field to categorize your clips and make them accessible even more easily. Keyword-assigned clips will always be prioritized in search results over other clips.

The Clip Manager recognizes clips that consist of a local file path or web link. Ctrl+Shift+double-click such links to open the folder in File Explorer or the website in your default browser.
